In mid- 16th century, an Italian family wanted their 11-year old son to be a Minister. However, in their home-town there was no Ministerial school. They decided to send the child to Napoli – by boat!  In that era the Turkish corsairs (pirates) dominated The Mediterranean. They captured the ship in which the child was travelling.  They brought the child to Istanbul.

He brought coffee to Istanbul, and introduced it to the Palace and then to the high society. Up until then, tea was the only popular hot drink.

LAICISM IS TO TREAT ALL BELIEVERS AND NON-BELIEVERS EQUALLY, AND LEAVE RELIGION IN THE PRIVATE DOMAIN

Raising children with required values and as useful members of the society requires high qualities. Therefore, women, being the nation’s mothers, need to be more enlightened and progressive than men.

VIOLENCE IS ENCOURAGED, PROTECTED AND EVEN NOURISHED UNDER THE SACRED MEANS OF RELIGION

I am honored to be here as a contemporary author of modern Turkey where great leader Atatürk introduced secularism, ninty one years ago.

I feel so lucky to have grown up in Atatürk’s Turkey,  and also in a family where girls, for generations, had been raised as praised individuals with rights to study, to choose their way of life,  to choose their husbands with whom they stood beside with love all the way. Those women were strong and brave and they set a great example for me.

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION FOR A TEACHER: HAYDAR GÖFER

I had a ball visiting my home country Turkey last month- mostly the schools where I had spent perhaps the happiest times of my life.  What prompted the trip was the end of the centennial and the beginning of the 101st birthday celebration of one of my favorite teachers at Tarsus American College (TAC), Haydar Göfer. I had missed the beginning of the 100th year in February of last year.

BECOMING BILINGUAL

Part II of II– Interview | Part I
A. Becoming Bilingual

1. What was your motive to learn another language?

In early 1970’s in Turkey, learning another language was not a part of the public school system, in particular, in the elementary school and during the first five-year years. However, after elementary school, starting in the middle school, public school system offered one-foreign language option and once-a-week as 40 min. within the following three: English, French and German

I had chosen English. On the other hand, I realized that once-a-week and total 40 min. based on the memorizing vocabulary and reading The Smith Family story alone was not enough.

Derleyen: Naci KAPTAN

[Read more…]
