LAICISM IS TO TREAT ALL BELIEVERS AND NON-BELIEVERS EQUALLY, AND LEAVE RELIGION IN THE PRIVATE DOMAIN

Raising children with required values and as useful members of the society requires high qualities. Therefore, women, being the nation’s mothers, need to be more enlightened and progressive than men.

VIOLENCE IS ENCOURAGED, PROTECTED AND EVEN NOURISHED UNDER THE SACRED MEANS OF RELIGION

I am honored to be here as a contemporary author of modern Turkey where great leader Atatürk introduced secularism, ninty one years ago.

I feel so lucky to have grown up in Atatürk’s Turkey,  and also in a family where girls, for generations, had been raised as praised individuals with rights to study, to choose their way of life,  to choose their husbands with whom they stood beside with love all the way. Those women were strong and brave and they set a great example for me.

Birds Without Wings, by Louis de Bernieres

This book tells about what happened to the Greeks of Anatolia at the end of First World War. For many years the Greek version of  events misled the people, never accepting that it was a blunder on  their part and caused untold death and destruction in Anatolia and  resettlement of 1,500,000 Anatolian refuges. Louis de Berniere, a  British soldier whose grandparent fought in the Dardanelle battles, tells about this event, truthfully, including the life of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, from his birth to 1923 when the Republic of Turkey was established.

I visited Kayaköy several times, which is a wonderful place, as you have described in your book. The stories on the last days of the Otoman Empire, the population exchange and the life of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk are very moving. As you have told HDN- SW, Birds Without Wings is the Turkish ”War and Peace.” Thank you for being a friend of Turkey.
