CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION FOR A TEACHER: HAYDAR GÖFER

I had a ball visiting my home country Turkey last month- mostly the schools where I had spent perhaps the happiest times of my life.  What prompted the trip was the end of the centennial and the beginning of the 101st birthday celebration of one of my favorite teachers at Tarsus American College (TAC), Haydar Göfer. I had missed the beginning of the 100th year in February of last year.

A GIANT PASSES ON – ŞÜKRÜ SERVER AYA

Obituary
“Ben giderim adım kalır
Dostlar beni hatırlasın
Düğün olur bayram gelir
Dostlar beni hatırlasın
Can kafeste durmaz uçar
Dünya bir han konan göçer
Ay dolanır yıllar geçer
Dostlar beni hatırlasın
Can bedenden ayrılacak
Tütmez baca yanmaz ocak
Selam olsun kucak kucak”

Poem by  Bircan ÜNVER
Put your head up
Open your eyes to
The boundlessness of your heart

Just listen to the absolute silence
Then your heart will speak with the Cosmos
And, the Cosmos back to you…

ANNETTE HESLOP AND ENERGY4ALL

Below article by Harvey Tordoff in the United Kingdom provides a brief history and the pathways to, now it is called: Sustainable Energy For All | SEForALL
Initially, its short form used as SE4ALL in 2011, which is also one of the 17 Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals. In it, SDG#7 is specifically dedicated to:
Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
* * *
At the United Nations Framework on Climate Change conference in Katowice in December 2018 the US, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait rejected a motion to welcome the latest study.  Australia remained silent.  But despite national Governments taking a strategic stance over what they see as their own short-term interests, progress is made.  I want to tell you about Annette Heslop, who (also in December 2018) was presented with an MBE* from HRH Prince William.  An MBE (Member of the British Empire) is one of the highest awards given to British civilians, and was in recognition of Annette’s contribution to community-owned renewable energy projects.

BECOMING BILINGUAL

Part II of II– Interview | Part I
A. Becoming Bilingual

1. What was your motive to learn another language?

In early 1970’s in Turkey, learning another language was not a part of the public school system, in particular, in the elementary school and during the first five-year years. However, after elementary school, starting in the middle school, public school system offered one-foreign language option and once-a-week as 40 min. within the following three: English, French and German

I had chosen English. On the other hand, I realized that once-a-week and total 40 min. based on the memorizing vocabulary and reading The Smith Family story alone was not enough.

Interview conducted by J.U.C. [Read more…]

A BILINGUAL FIRST GENERATION IMMIGRANT

L.M.: A Bilingual First Generation Immigrant
by J.U.C.

One language is one-person and two languages are two-persons
Introduction
I have interviewed my own mom for this assignment, L.M. She was born and raised in Turkey, and as an adult became the first of her family to have legal residency in the United States.  She learned English by teaching herself before she came to the United States, where once she arrived,  the English language then became used in her daily vocabulary. AN INDIAN LAMENT

An Indian Lament by Harvey Tordoff

Poems by:
Harvey TORDOFF

The Premonition
My father told me of a fearful dream.  He said:
“I dreamt I saw the greatest emigration that has yet been through our country.

I looked North and South and East and West and saw nothing but dust.
And I heard a great weeping.
I saw women crying, and my men shot down by the white people.
Oh, my dear children!
You may think it is only a dream,
But I feel that it will come to pass.”

O LANOO! THE SECRET DOCTRINE UNVEILED

Book: O Lanoo!
(A lanoo is a seeker of spiritual truths.)
by Harvey TORDOFF
“…we are spiritual beings in physical bodies; we go through many incarnations on our path to enlightenment. “
The Secret Doctrine by Madame Blavatsky was reviewed in The Book Reader, May/June 1988.
This massive study of man, of nature, of spiritual evolution, of the essence of reality is an astonishing document.”
This quote is remarkable for the reaction of the reviewer; it takes a special kind of book to astonish 100 years after publication. The Secret Doctrine‘ was published simultaneously in London and New York in November 1888.  Blavatsky, a self-educated woman, sub-titled it ‘The Synthesis of  Science, Religion and Philosophy‘. WATERGATES

Happiness is the universal force to be attained as the final objective of humanity.”

A man walks to his father’s castle to flood it, one by one, bucket by bucket. It’s an “underwater mystery” he thought, the father would have to navigate through the floating furniture, to avoid any injury. He spent a few hours talking to the television about his plan, Nixon looked right at him, over the radio and blamed it on the man. The father is to swim…they say you can’t judge a fish by his ability to climb a tree, but you can judge a man who beats his “underwater mystery”.

KAZAKSHTAN’S PEACEKEEPERS ARRIVE IN LEBANON

One hundred and twenty peacekeepers of the joint peacekeeping company of Kazakhstan’s Peacekeeping Regiment arrived in the Lebanese Republic to participate in the mission of the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL), serving as part of INDKAZBATT. It is for the first time in the history of Central Asia that a peacekeeping contingent from the region is participating in a UN peacekeeping operation.
The necessary pre-deployment training, specific to this mission, was carried out for the personnel of the Kazakh contingent, both in India and Kazakhstan, the latter by an Indian mobile training team.
